Finally Novak Djokovic has made claim to be the best tennis player in the world. Novak Djokovic has finally entered the exclusive club with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Novak Djokovic won Wimbledon this past Sunday.  In the process of beating Rafael Nadal for the fifth time this year in a final, he also became the world’s number one men’s player. This was the fifth final this season that Nadal had lost to the Djokovic, but it was the first time Djokovic had beat Nadal in a Grand Slam event. Regardless of the result against Nadal in the final, Djokovic would have been number one in the computer rankings; however, if Novak would have lost questions would have risen about beating Nadal on the big stage. Novak Djokovic captured the number one ranking from Nadal after he beat Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the semifinals of the event. Not only was this Djokovic’s first Wimbledon final, it was Nadal’s fifth final at Wimbledon. Nadal had been unbeaten in 20 matches at the All England Club, and it was all over in a flash.

Rafael Nadal had won the last four out of five majors and he had won Wimbledon the last two times he played on the final Sunday of the event. However, Djokovic was on the hottest player on tour and he was not going to be denied the chance to fulfill his dream of winning Wimbledon. If Rafael Nadal wants to be known as the greatest player of all time, he will have to beat the best in his era. Like Federer, questions will start to come up about Nadal being the greatest of all time. Nadal and Federer may be considered the greatest of all time, but is Novak Djokovic the greatest player in this era. Arguments can be made for three players, but right now Djokovic is having the best season of any player. He now holds two of three Grand Slam events already played and he has climbed to the top of the mountain with a 48-1 record. His one loss was to Roger Federer at the French Open.

Djokovic’s goalscoming into the season was to win Wimbledon and to become world number one player in the sport. He has accomplished both thanks to his amazing play over the last seven months. His play has taken men’s tennis to new heights. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray are the big four in men’s tennis and the sport has never been better. The men’s game is more competitive than ever. Djokovic got in shape.HE believed in himself and that he could win. This confidence enabled him to start playing the best tennis of his career. Over the last three years, he showed at times he could compete with the best but was never consistent. Now that he has brought the consistency into his game, he will be at the top of men’s tennis for a long time. Many people wondered which player would stop the Federer-Nadal train from taking over the sport. The experts thought it would be Novak Djokovic, but he never showed his potential until now. He is on pace for the best season since John McEnroe in 1984.

As the ATP Season moves to the North American hard courts for master series events like Montreal and Cincinnati culminating with the US Open in New York, can Djokovic must keep up his level of play throughoutthe summer. Since he plays his best tennis on the hard court surface, he should continue the success.  Djokovic is the early favorite to win the US Open, but that could change if Nadal or Federer get on a run during the summer. Djokovic proved he can win on all surfaces and all it took was the right of state of mind. The sport of tennis will be in a good place for many years to come if the level of play can continue from players like Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, and Murray. But for now Djokovic is the new king of the court and he is the one being chased by the rest of the field.
